Abaxis was founded on April 1989. Shortly after, Abaxis acquired exclusive patent rights from the national laboratory of Oak Ridge, to develop and produce a biochemical analyzer that is able to perform multiple blood analysis from only one drop of blood.

Abaxis covers more than 90% of general chemical analysis normally used in medical and veterinarian diagnostics. In 2018 it has been acquired by Zoetis.
